GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:
The purpose of the class is to perform public transportation operational and dispatching duties for fixed route and paratransit operations. Operates a variety of communication equipment: two-way radio, telephone, and dispatching system to ensure efficient and timely bus services is provided to passengers. Speak English and have excellent reading and writing skills. This class works under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
Oversee, track the movement of buses, and communicate with operators for fixed route and paratransit services by utilizing: computer software, ITS, and two-way radio to ensure timely, effective and safe service delivery.

Ensure transit services adhere to set bus assignments, schedules, and manifest; modify and update schedules/manifest to improve service when necessary and communicate status of information to Communication Specialist I.

Answer / respond operational phone calls, two-way radio and passenger requests; decide on appropriate course of action, dispatch assistance as required or refer to appropriate personnel.

Coordinate and communicate with local departments such as Police, Fire, and EMS, to provide detail essential information and get quick response to emergency situations and establish emergency detours.

Maintain effective communication with maintenance department regarding mechanical problems seeking prompt response to minimize service interruptions/missed trips.

Maintain accurate records, logs and files as they relate to emergencies, scheduling problems, mechanical problems, address verification, directions, cancellations, no shows, etc...

Maintain a library for immediate availability of reference operational materials such as computer manuals, maps, policy/procedures SOPs, policy memos and other reference materials.

Have good knowledge of Transit service area.

Work a flexible work schedule.

Perform related tasks as necessary.

Requires giving information, guidance and assistance to people to directly facilitate tasks accomplishments; may give instructions or assistance to coworkers.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Handles or uses machines, tools, or equipment that require moderate instruction and experience such as two way radios, vehicles, buses, computers, peripherals, and software programs such as work processing, spreadsheets or custom applications.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing skilled work using common sense following set policies and procedures, ability to multi-task and deal with almost constant problem solving situations.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division necessary for reporting purposes.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Must communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to read sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures; ability to write complete sentences using basic grammar, complete work orders, forms, daily reports, work schedules, and ability to speak English and Spanish preferred.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Performs clerical or manual tasks requiring a complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS:
Requires being responsible for own actions, requiring almost constant decisions affecting passengers, drivers, coworkers, other City departments and the general public. Works in a moderate environment with guidelines and policies but with frequent variations from the routine.

VOCATIONAL/ EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
Requires high school diploma or GED with some college or university hours in communication or specialized advance training in related field.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Professional certification(s) in computer software(s) and customer service. Class B Commercial Drivers License with passenger endorsement required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over one year and up to and including two years.

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, bending, lifting and over head reach the majority of the time.

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and speaking.
