GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS:
Under general supervision of a Security Supervisor and/or Police Sergeant, this class is responsible for securing facilities and maintaining order on city property by setting alarms, making rounds, monitoring parking areas, managing noise levels and assisting citizens. The class works according to set procedures under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
Patrols specified areas such as city buildings, parks and trails on foot, motor vehicle or other means.

Locks and unlocks doors to facilities, and arms or disarms facility alarm.

Monitors and secures parking lot and surrounding areas.

Controls the noise level and undesired behavior within a facility.

Communicates with the public regarding policies and hours.

Turns computers and appliances on and off.

Performs related tasks as necessary.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:
Requires comparing or inspecting items against a standard.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:
Requires serving others such as customers; attends to their requests and exchanging information with them.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Requires handling or using machines, tools, or equipment that requires little or no prior experience such as two-way radio and light vehicles.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing routine work using common sense.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing basic addition and subtraction, such as making change.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires reading basic sentences, instructions, or work orders; writing simple sentences and completing uncomplicated job forms; speaking sentences using basic grammar. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires clerical or manual tasks prescribed by standard practices, but which may require computation, several procedures, and independent judgment with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISION-MAKING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires very few decisions, affecting only the individual; works in a very stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/ oral instructions.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
VOCATIONAL/ EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
Requires high school diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training. Must be at least 18 years of age.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Valid Texas Drivers License. Texas Level II non-commissioned license preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over six months and up to and including one year.

Light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job risks exposure to bright/ dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/ or cold and traffic.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking.
